Hurricane Irene is over...power's back on! So grateful! And...Happy Birthday, Ashley!

During Irene - lots and lots of rain...

Hannah calls this "Lake Forge"...this is our hurricane parking lot...We think the vehicles are out of the "fall zone"...

Pine tree fell in the back yard...I think this is the cracking sound that I heard when I terrifyingly took Burgess out to the bathroom at 9:30 pm...Scott was at work, so I was home alone with the kiddos and the dog -- and no electricity.  It gets VERY dark out here.  We lost power around 7:45pm.  I last saw the weather/radar around 5:30 pm and thought the storm was about over, but Scott said the peak winds would happen around 7 pm.  He was right.  Just as it was getting dark, the wind and rain really picked up.  Great.  We got BATTERED.  That's what happened during Hurricane Isabel 8 years ago.  There was lots of praying going on in our house.  It was the longest night of our lives.  The kids and I were huddled in the family room and tried to sleep.  Burgie wouldn't let me out of his sight -- what a great watchdog.  What an awesome CREATOR and DESIGNER we worship -- it's amazing how well God designed these trees to bend and sway the way they do.  Yes, some fall down, but most don't.
Small gumball tree fell down...

Lots of small branches came down

So disappointed in our pumpkins.  We started with about 70 plants and have ended up with 2.  Pretty sad!  Millions of squash bugs!  Looks like we'll have to BUY pumpkins this year...very humbled.

Hurricane preparations -- lots of water buckets (since we have a well), candles, flashlights, cooler...
Thankful for the generator.
We don't have gutters up yet...flooding in the basement.

Clean up crew...

More clean up crew

Gigantic branch fell onto the barn and made a hole in the metal roof

Sweet potato flower.  So pretty!  These plants have been easy to grow -- very tolerant of dry conditions, no bugs.  We really haven't done much of anything to them.  It'll be interesting to see what the sweet potatoes look like when we dig them up.

Our garden got pelted.  Tomatoes have fallen down.  Disaster area.  What the raccoons didn't get, Irene did.  I can't imagine HAVING to grow our own food or else not eating in the winter.  Growing a profitable vegetable garden is very hard work.  We did achieve one of our goals though -- having more than enough tomatoes.  ;-)

*******

We are so thankful for the Lord's protection and provision.  He is so good.  We've already been through Hurricane Isabel (2003 -- we were out of power for 9 days and had MANY trees down - a huge one was on the roof of our last house) and Tropical Storm Gastone (2004 -- this "not a big deal" storm caused a "small" tornado to throw our neighbor's tree onto our last house).  There are many very large trees near this house and we thank God that none of them fell.

Today is Ashley's 12th birthday, so we went out looking for a restaurant that might be open and settled on Five Guys.  When we returned home, we were very pleasantly surprised to find that the electricity was back on!  Praise the Lord!  It was nice to hear our children so grateful for something that we take for granted every day -- electricity -- but that we miss so much when we don't have it.  During the past couple of days, we've talked about Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House books we've read -- how did they do it?!?  We act like such big wimps today!  We are very spoiled...and very blessed...Thank you, God, that you don't give us what we deserve, but rather, that You lavish us with blessings...

Visitors!

What a nice visit and an honor to meet them!  Mr. Baxter and Ms. Ruth, the original owners and builders of the house/property, stopped by for a visit this past Sunday.  They are amazing - sharp as tacks!  They brought photo albums depicting their projects and endeavors out here - they raised horses, cows, sheep, and pigs.  They also grew pumpkins, berries, grapes, all kinds of vegetables, etc, etc.  They fed the leaders of 50 nations pumpkin soup while they attended a meeting in Colonial Williamsburg during the Reagan years.  Well, they provided the 50 pumpkins for the soup!  Such a wonderful surprise and visit.  They were so encouraging and positive about our work out here.  They are welcome back anytime!

Then on Tuesday, we had an EARTHQUAKE!  5.9!  Dawn and the kids were about to eat lunch in the kitchen when the trembling/rumbling/swaying began.  We first thought it was the washing machine way out of balance, but it's never shaken the house.  Then I thought it was low-flying fighter jets, but then I realized there was no jet noise.  A huge truck?  No....it finally occurred to me that it might be an earthquake!!!  I've never experienced one before!  I remembered my soils professor at VT comment that he was concerned about a large east coast earthquake occurring.  Scott was at work and also felt it.  My sister actually had a few items fall from shelves!  No damage seen here.  Praise God.

Now we're preparing for Hurricane Irene which is due Saturday.  Ugh.  Isabel rocked our world 8 years ago.  Praying for protection, safety, no damage...that God would weaken it and direct it back out to sea.  He is in control of everything and that includes the weather.

Catching up on photos....

Dawn painting the garage access door black to match...

Our last dinner in the garage...
The move!  We are so grateful for all the help!

Dawn's sister, Shannon, made a run to Walmart to buy drinks.
We weren't thinking and had already moved all the drinks over to the other house....
Shannon with the drink bar...
Installing a microwave is a hard job!  This took HOURS...

Bye, bye rental...So thankful to have lived in such a nice
house and neighborhood for the past 13 months.
This group of 2 does and 3 baby deer are so cute.
They love to eat the figs!  We see them every day!

Yum - tomato (from our garden), basil (also from our garden), and fresh mozzarella...

We did a dog swap with Dawn's sister.  Tilly was out of control and hyper.  We couldn't let her run loose out here and were also concerned about her getting into a scuffle with the groundhogs and raccoons that also live here.  Tilly gets along great with my sister's dogs, but she was having trouble with Turk and Burgess getting along.....so.....she has Tilly and we have Burgess.
Yea!  One completed project!  500+ more to go!
Don't think so...It's a little hard to see (his head is near the middle of the photo), but there is an enormous black snake looking in our window.  It was awful!  He was huge!!!  So thankful for the neighbors next door who came over in their gator with an arsenal of weapons and took care of this guy.  We are hoping this is the same one I saw under the front porch a week earlier and that we've seen under the back deck.  Snakes that are close to the house gotta go.

Yummy watermelon from our garden!  Beautiful!

Moved!

All thanks and praise to God!  We moved all of our stuff from the rental to the "new" house last Thursday through Saturday (8/6).  We cleaned the rental on Sunday and Scott left at 4:30 am Monday for a week of training in Texas.  He returned safely late Friday night.  Well, on Monday - the first day "by myself with the kids out in the country" was overwhelming.  So thankful that my friend, Katrina, took the girls to their sewing class so I could stay home and try to unpack and organize.  I was cleaning the front porch and heard a strange sound.  When I looked over the edge, the biggest snake I've ever seen out here (and I've seen way too many in the past year!) was rapidly squirming from under the porch to a nearby shrub.  Yikes!  I actually did not scream (for the 1st time when seeing one of those dreadful creatures) and got my 40 lb bag of lime pellets.  I scattered it all around the porch (apparently snakes don't like lime), but then Hannah saw it about an hour later.  Then we got a call from my sister saying that Burgess (we did a "dog swap" with my sister -- she has Tilly now and we have Burg) had run away and was down at the horse stables a few properties away.  Daniel threw a few tantrums.  Day 1.  Praise the Lord that things went much better after that because I was worn out!  What day is it??!!  It has been such a crazy whirlwind and we are exhausted.  Oh yeah -- and we finally moved Daniel out of the crib which by the 4th child was held together by bungee cords!  Scott's friend, Kevin, whom he's known since age 6 years was in charge of the crib dismantle.  He had never seen anything like it!  ;-) Daniel slept in his "big boy bed" (ie, bunk bed) for the first time on Sunday night.  Whew.

Oh I forgot -- the appliances were delivered Wednesday, just 2 days before our move.  We are so thankful that everything worked.  And the plumber installed the toilets and faucets on Friday, just one day before our move.  That is so not my personality and cutting it way too close.  But, once again, God gave us peace and He worked everything out.

I was a little nervous about the move.  We have way too much stuff.  Period.  I am praying that God would help me/us to wisely discern what to get rid of because I don't want to be a slave to material possessions or spend too much time taking care of stuff.  I don't want to live in the clutter and disorganization that we did while in the rental.  When Scott's parents' passed away a few years ago, we inherited a number of antiques that are in great condition and have been in his family for quite a while.  They are beautiful and I'd like for the kids to have the opportunity to have them if they want when they get older. This house is a little smaller than the last house we built, so we have even less room for stuff.

Anyways, we weren't sure how many people would be willing to help us move for the second time in 13 months and it was a big swim team week-end (Champs meet).  I was praying for weather mercies (it had been soooo hot this July and the previous year it was 100+ degrees for the entire move week) and for God to bring the right people to help us - and enough of them.  I remembered the missionary story of George Mueller -- he didn't ask people, but God, when he needed something.  That's mostly what we did.  Scott asked a few guys, but then the kids and I prayed that God would provide what we needed - and I wasn't even sure what that was.  God knows.  Well, we were blown away by all of the help we received both on Thursday and Saturday.  I think we had 12 men helping on Saturday alone.  We had the 26 ft. moving truck loaded and over to the "farm" by lunch.  Thank you, Jesus!  And thank you to all who helped us, especially Jasen and John who were there on both days.  They made 3 trips on Thursday with a 16 ft. truck and the help of Fred, Scott S. and boys (who knew we'd have 4 men and several big boys to help us during the week!?).  We are so thankful and completely overwhelmed.  In fact, the couple who is moving into the rental after us stopped by during our move last Saturday and exclaimed how amazing it was that we had so much help.  They said, "I don't think we even know that many people!"  The many vehicles lined both sides of the street.  AND....the weather was better than it had been - slightly cooler and no rain.  God is good!  Soooo grateful.  God does hear, He does know our needs, and He does provide.

I STILL haven't found my Bible (that is driving me CRAZY!), but these words from Chris Tomlin's song, "Forever", are perfect and we sang it in church this morning.  Besides, so many of Chris' words/songs are direct quotes from the Bible... ;-)

"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.  His love endures forever.  Sing praise, sing praise."

p.s.  We have a laptop temporarily set up for now and I don't know how to post photos from it.  Scott will set up another computer when he gets a chance and then I can upload some recent pics!  He's helping Jasen's family move today.  We spent a couple of hours at Lowes yesterday buying those things you take for granted -- toilet paper holders, towel rings and bars, mirrors for the bathrooms....Hoping to get those installed this week...Praying that the trim guy will have time to start working on our bookshelves and two closets.  I can't unpack many boxes until he does that...

Produce from our garden!  Look at that watermelon -- our first one!

Painted the front door black today.

The third coating was put on the floors Saturday.
We've been staying off them to let it harden well (socks only).  Look great!

Pretty...
