Polyface Farm - Shenandoah Valley

Ahhh - we've wanted to visit Polyface for a while now...

Love the hoophouse concept - rabbits, chickens, and pigs are in here during the winter months composting a carbon material (wood chips, etc), then most of the compost is removed (it went up to the top of the boards) and spread outside.  Crops are then started early spring - everything from tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beets, lettuces, peas, etc....They look great!

So thankful that we brought our boots!
Hayride/"Lunatic Tour" led by Joel himself!

First stop - pastured hens/egg layers...We could see the cattle through the trees.

Pigs composting...
Mr. Salatin moving a chicken and turkey tractor to a new "salad bar".
One of two hayrides on our "Lunatic Tour"...
"Everything I want to do is illegal."

Ashley, Hannah, Connor, and Daniel with Mr. Salatin.
What a privilege to learn from the best - we were able to ask Joel lots of questions.
He is an expert in biodiverse and "beyond organic" farming.  Loved being here...
Afterwards, we visited his restaurant marketer's family farm to
see their Dexter cattle which we are very interested in.

Lacrosse and baseball...

Happy 9th Birthday, Connor!

Experimenting with black plastic this year to help control weeds...A friend installed this and helped Scott lay out irrigation...Starting to plant tomatoes and peppers...

Front porch being completed.  Wood has been wrapped in PVC and painted (paint is supposed to last about 20 years on PVC)...next is installing the railing...
